Please tell us your views on the Bill and explain why it will affect you.: Engender welcomes the introduction of this Bill for the following reasons: • Human rights should be an ever-advancing phenomenon; would not support rolling back the rights of same sex couples in order to ‘equalise’ treatment for mixed sex couples. • Although marriage has evolved profoundly, for many people, particularly women, it is rooted in patriarchal and outdated ideas encumbered with traditional societal expectations of women. • Women are likely to benefit from more alternatives to cohabitation and marriage because of their lesser access to resources, assets and income, due to systemic issues that include unpaid caring roles, the gender pay gap, violence against women and unequal representation.
