Creation of community orchards and allotments

Creation of community orchards and allotments

How does this impact on Community Wellbeing? Valuable community meeting place to grow and gather local food whilst improving local environments and contributing to climate change. Why should the Committee focus on this as part of their future work? Large parts of cities, towns and villages have large green spaces owned by councils which are under utilised and are a burden on local authorities due to maintenance requirements. Creating orchards and allotments for the local community would provide big benefits for everyone.

Points

This is great and very important for our wellbeing as well as the planet.

Would hugely improve health by encouraging more to eat fruit and veg.

It would be particularly good for children and the elderly to be involved. It would be educational for the children and good for keeping the elderlie healthy by doing gentle exercise and interact with other people of all ages.

Fruit trees could be planted anywhere, not just orchards, those using foodbanks could benefit from free fruit, children could learn where fruit comes from, and it helps the environment, it's a win win!!

We have fantastic community land initiatives on Arran but they are hampered by lack of regular buses, transport infrastructure . Need more land to be made available in easier to access areas.
