Youth Work

Youth Work

How does this impact on Community Wellbeing? working with young people, facilitating positive experiences for young people and taking young people off the streets and away from potential danger and encouraing them to be active members of their community. Why should the Committee focus on this as part of their future work? Youth work is a vital service that all young people should be able to access. Enabling young people to make positive choices about their lives steering them away from activities that can be damaging for them for example: under age sex, drug taking, alcohol, violence and anti social behaviours etc. A good youth worker will develop positive working relationships with young people. Cutbacks have removed youth work from most communities and it needs to be reinstated asap.

Points

youth workers are a valuable resource that most communities are now sadly lacking due to stringent cutbacks but studies have shown that youth work alongside other community services and opportunities can be part of a solution that addresses drug taking, alcohol abuse, mental health issues etc and can enable young people to realise their potential in a a healthy adult/young person working relationship.

Youth workers can further stigmatise young people by always targeting young people who are in vulnerable groupings. Open youth work to all young people.
