Review of SPS Policy on Transgender Prisoners

Review of SPS Policy on Transgender Prisoners

The 2014 Scottish Prison Service policy on housing trans prisoners allows a trans prisoner to be housed in the estate that fits their gender identity on the basis of self-ID alone. No impact assessment of this policy on female prisoners has been carried out. Neither women in prison nor any group representing their interests were consulted prior to the policy being implemented. At the end of last year it was reported that the SPS will be conducting a review of their policy on housing transgender prisoners. We call upon the Justice Committee to seek urgent evidence from SPS on the status of this review. We call upon the Justice Committee to seek assurance from SPS that the voices of women in prison, and those who represent them, will be heard and that the impact on female prisoners will be taken into consideration. We call upon the Justice Committee to seek assurance from SPS that no logo of any advocacy group will be included in the branding of the new policy document.
