There are people in Scotland currently taking part in human trials of gene therapy treatments. If proven safe and effective, these treatments offer the prospect of life-long improvements in patient quality of life. Current systems for evaluating cost effectiveness of treatment usually look about 5 years ahead and are ill suited to assessing these new treatments. The Scottish Government will need a new payment model to make sure NHS Scotland patients have access to these cutting edge medical advances if they want them.
