Full homeworking in winter recess

What changes would you like to see in Session 6? In the winter recesses- December, Feb, October we could all work from home How can this help reduce the Parliament’s environmental impact and embrace sustainability? It means that lighting and heating in the building can be much reduced

Points

As long as it was a choice for staff. If it was not mandatory to come into the building during winter recess and there was the option to work from home then that would allow staff to decide their best option. This might reduce the numbers using the building and enable some offices spaces to be shut down to make some savings

While some people like working from home others, like myself really struggle. We have a small house with no spare space to work so working from home is far from ideal. If you have plenty of space and spare rooms then yes its fine but that is not the case for many of us.

While I personally would support this for those who can do it, it is not practical for some as certain offices must attend Holyrood to meet objectives. BIT still has to address equipment failures and requests and that objective cannot be fulfilled working from home.

Homeworking for me is a horrible experience that is endured not enjoyed. It is damaging to both my mental wellbeing and my physical health as I do not have access to a proper desk or work space that meets my needs, nor am I privileged enough to have a home that could accommodate them. It is totally unacceptable to force everyone to work at home outwith the pandemic. It also just moves the impact of the lighting and heating to individual homes instead, which are likely to be less efficient.

IS the heating/lighting in the building actually turned off when no one is working there? What about the maintenance, building, catering and cleaning staff? We cannot switch off the outsourced contracts for part of the year or the staff would be out of work. I don't have my heating/lighting on when I work in Holyrood in the winter and it's 50/50 as to whether heating 100''s of homes vs fewer workplaces in winter is carbon positive/negative.

I think this would undermine our core work. In person is essential for some of the complex, cross team and challenging work that we do. Flexible I agree is good. an effort to do both home and in work.
