Review local government in the Highlands

The diversity of communities in remote rural communities in the Highlands is hugely under represented in Highland Council. Basing representation on population means that the population centre of Inverness gets disproportionate representation. Wards in Inverness can be walked across in minutes while wards in Sutherland take hours to drive across. So much time has to be spent travelling by Sutherland’s councillors they cannot devote as much time to their work. Recent reviews by the boundary commission have only served to exasperate this situation, recommending further reducing the number of councillors in remote rural areas while increasing representation in the city of Inverness.
