Scotland’s drug issue needs to be viewed as a health and social emergency, not a criminal issue. Overdose prevention services save lives, preventing deaths caused by drug overdoses and transmitted diseases. More must be done to fund the provision of overdose preventing drugs such as naloxone, clean syringes and safe clean spaces for drug users, so that while working towards overcoming their addiction they aren’t risking their lives. Currently people in Glasgow are relying on the generosity and charity of volunteers to provide this service, which is a clear failure of the state. Scotland needs a new approach to ending drug deaths.
