What is the future for 3rd sector delivery of social care?

In 2018 28% of the Scottish social care workforce were employed by the 3rd sector. The cost-of-living crisis is having a profoundly negative effect on our social care sector. Last winter, pressures faced by 3rd sector providers and the people supported were genuinely unprecedented. This winter looks even gloomier. With many staff leaving the workforce (for better paid jobs elsewhere). New staff not being recruited. There is a loss of expertise, potential , and a massive undermining of key services – all of which risks support for individuals now and in the future. With the sustainable solution being long-term reform building a vibrant social care system, now is a critical point for social care with significant risk for service viability impacting negatively on those in need and staff NOTE: Aspects of this question were discussed in Committee on the 12th September 2023.
