Genuine local democracy and community decision making

Housing, income, employment, transport, education, infrastructure. All have an immense effect on need and service provision on islands and other remote and rural communities. Yet these communities have no actual control over them. Councils are too big and too focussed on their overall budgets to involve themselves in the specifics of the needs of these communities and the services that are provided for them. National government are so far removed from them and so focussed on the urban and semi urban environment where the vast majority of the population lives that they may as well be operating from the moon. Nothing will change until attitudes change and political and national institutions begin to genuinely collaborate with island and other remote and rural communities to ensure that planning and decision making on infrastructure and service provision are actually responsive to their specific needs and circumstances. Asking for the moon here.....
