Housing is a challenge nationally, but there is a particular housing shortage in remote and rural areas, especially in popular tourist destinations where limited housing stock is often bought as holiday homes or lets. To attract people, including pharmacists, to work in remote and rural areas, there must be some affordable accommodation. The impact of not having a pharmacist can mean that patients cannot access services or have to travel long distances to do so. Island communities often offer financial incentives to encourage people to take up jobs in those areas. This model could be extended to other remote and rural areas, such as the Highlands.
