Impact of lack of independent pharmacy provision

Everyone with Parkinson's needs an individual combination of medicines to keep them well and times. doses and preparations should not be changed without advice from the specialist prescriber. The increasing consolidation of local pharmacies in remote and rural Scotland is causing issues, because some large pharmacy providers will only source their medicines from certain wholesalers - and they are the only local pharmacy option. This means that if there is a disruption in a specific medicine's supply chain and the large firm's preferred wholesalers do not have it in stock, people can be left without essential medications and at risk of becoming unwell. We have heard of people driving very long distances in rural areas to pick up medicines, having phoned around pharmacies in a large area to check where meds are in stock. If they can't get them, they risk becoming very unwell.
