Medical staff have had appraisal and governance for many years, to ensure their practice is both safe and of the highest quality. Hospital managers are able to work in the NHS without any rules of governance and with no system of appraisal for them. Doctors are bound by the GMC but there is no equivalent for hospital managers. It is now time to seriously consider putting a system in place. Haven’t the lessons been learnt that there needs to be a higher standard for managers?
